Your first 90 days in Nicaragua: the arrival checklist

The visa got you in — this is what turns you into a functioning resident: the registration clock, the ID number everything else depends on, and the money, healthcare, and license steps in the order they actually unlock. Each step links the official source so you can verify the current rule.

The catch that burns new arrivals

The political and sanctions situation is the dominant practical risk — banking access, NGO and church affiliations, and property rights have all been affected since 2018, and rules have changed with little notice. Verify current conditions close to your move date rather than relying on anything written months earlier.

The checklist, in the order it unlocks

1

File for residencia with the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería and obtain the cédula de residencia

Before your CA-4 stay expires — 90 days shared across the CA-4 bloc, with a one-time extension available at Migración

Every foreign document in the file needs an apostille and an official Spanish translation, and Migración expects originals. Processing has been slow and unpredictable since 2018; treat published timelines as optimistic.

2

Get your RUC (Registro Único de Contribuyentes)

Business activity, invoicing and filings with the DGI require it; the cédula de residencia is the identifier for banking and daily life.

Registered with the Dirección General de Ingresos once you hold residence; salaried employment is handled through the employer and INSS.

3

Open a bank account

BAC, Banpro and Lafise open accounts on the cédula de residencia. Nicaragua's banking sector has operated under significant international sanctions pressure since 2018, which affects correspondent relationships — international transfers can be slow or blocked, and some foreign banks decline Nicaraguan counterparties entirely.

4

Enrol in healthcare

The public MINSA system is free at the point of use and covers most of the country, with INSS covering formal employees; quality is basic. Private hospitals in Managua (Vivian Pellas, Metropolitano) handle expatriate care at low cost by international standards, and serious cases are referred to Costa Rica or the US.

5

Sort your driver's license

A foreign licence with an International Driving Permit is accepted for the initial permitted stay; residents convert through the Policía Nacional's transit department, with a medical check and a test. Driving is on the right.

Deadlines and requirements vary by nationality, visa type, and region, and they change — this is information current as of 2026, not legal or immigration advice. Verify each step with the official source before you rely on it.
