The catch that burns new arrivals
Nothing works before the QID — not a bank account, not a lease, not a postpaid SIM — and the 30-day window depends on your employer moving promptly. Chase it actively rather than waiting, because the whole first month of your life stalls behind that card.
The checklist, in the order it unlocks
Complete the Qatar ID (QID) process — medical examination, fingerprinting, and residence-permit issuance through the Ministry of Interior
Within 30 days of arrival on a work visa; you cannot open a bank account, rent, or get a SIM contract until the QID is issued
The employer drives the whole process and holds the paperwork, but the medical and biometrics are your appointments to attend. Qatar abolished the exit-permit requirement for most workers in 2020 and removed the NOC requirement for changing jobs, which materially changed the balance of the kafala relationship.
Get your QID number (Qatar ID)
Qatar has no personal income tax, so the QID is the identifier that matters — banking, housing, healthcare, schooling, phone contracts and every government service run on it.
Issued by the Ministry of Interior once the medical and biometrics are complete; businesses register separately with the General Tax Authority.
Open a bank account
QNB, Doha Bank and CBQ open accounts on the QID and an employer salary certificate. The Wage Protection System means salaries must be paid into a local account, so this is not optional. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar and there are no exchange controls on remittances.
Enrol in healthcare
Health insurance is mandatory for residents and visitors under the 2022 health insurance law, with employers required to cover employees. Hamad Medical Corporation runs the public hospitals and the standard is high; private hospitals (Sidra, Al Ahli) handle much expatriate care. Confirm dependant cover explicitly — employer policies often exclude family.
Sort your driver's license
Residents from a list of countries can convert their licence to a Qatari one without testing on presentation of the QID and an eye test; others take the Qatari test. A temporary licence is available for the first period after arrival. Driving is on the right.
