The catch that burns new arrivals
Get the davčna številka first — it is issued quickly by FURS and unlocks the lease and the bank account, both of which the residence file then asks you to prove. Doing the steps in the intuitive order (permit, then bank, then tax number) stalls in the first week.

Get your davčna številka (Slovenian tax number) and EMŠO personal number
The tax number is required to sign a lease, open a bank account, or be paid; the EMŠO identifies you to health and social systems.
The tax number is issued by the Financial Administration (FURS) — you can get one before you have a permit, which is why it usually comes first; the EMŠO is assigned with residence registration.
Open a bank account
NLB, NKBM and Intesa Sanpaolo open accounts on the tax number, passport and proof of address; the tax number is the real prerequisite, not the permit, which makes it the sensible first errand. Slovenia is in the eurozone with good digital banking.
Enrol in healthcare
Compulsory health insurance runs through ZZZS for anyone employed, self-employed or paying voluntary contributions, with a chosen personal physician as the gatekeeper. Nearly everyone also buys supplementary insurance to cover the co-payment share — treat it as part of the base cost, not an upgrade.
Sort your driver's license
EU/EEA licences are valid. Other foreign licences may be used for up to one year from registering residence and must then be exchanged at the administrative unit; exchange without an exam depends on reciprocity, and where none exists the practical test is required.
